Coaches:

· Your players want to feel appreciated; so compliment them.

· Your players may lack direction; so guide them.

· Your players want to get better; so teach them.

· Your players are invested in your program; so care for them.

· Your players will occasionally lack the ‘want to’; so motivate them.

· Your players will make mistakes; so discipline them.

· Your players dictate your success; so appreciate them.

Parents:

· Be supportive and positive at all times; no yelling, cursing, or screaming at officials or coaches.

· Let your kids be kids; don’t push them too hard!

· Be proud of your children unconditionally; even when they don’t play particularly well.

· Encourage your kids to eat well, get sleep, and give 100% in everything they do.

· Let your children be coached! It is their team; not yours.

· Coaches shouldn’t tell you how to parent; you shouldn’t tell them how to coach.

· Listen to your children! If your child doesn’t say much; ask questions. Show an interest!

BGHS Gymnasium Getting Facelift!!

The BG Hoops Gymnasium started our summer facelift on Saturday, August 6th, 2011 and continued this week. The lobby has been painted and had a new floor put in, the gym is getting painted & new murals will be added and new banners, and the lobby trophy case is getting updated & upgraded. I am a huge advocate of Point Guard College (www.PGCBasketball.com / @PGCBasketball). I appreciate their mission, curriculum, and passion for the game. I have tremendous respect for their commitment to teaching the game the right way.

I never had the opportunity to meet the late Dick DeVenzio (PGC founder) – but am a fan of his work. I am thankful to have met many of PGC’s top staff members… Sefu Bernard (@SefuBernard), Mano Watsa (@ManoWatsa), and Lyndsey Fennelly(@LyndsHoops). They each do a terrific job and make a positive impact on the game.

PGC helps fight the mindset that is rampant in youth players today – ‘the disease of me.’ Many kids today don’t understand that basketball is a we game – not a me game.  They play for the scorebook, not the scoreboard. Am I allowed one more cliché? They play for the name on the back of their jersey instead of the name on the front.  OK, I think 3 overused coaching clichés should suffice in getting my point across.

Kidding aside, there are 3 symptoms of the ‘disease of me’ – each of which severely stagnates a player’s growth and development. Having worked a ton of camps and events this summer, I have seen each of these symptoms from players of every age and every level:

1.    Too cool
2.    Too good
3.    Too shy

Too cool: This symptom is rampant… in fact it is a borderline epidemic. Players are too cool to listen when a coach is talking, too cool to show enthusiasm during drills, too cool to warm-up properly, too cool to get on the floor for a loose ball or take a charge, and too cool let the people around them know that they don’t understand something or need some help.  Players are often more concerned with ‘how they look’ then ‘how they perform.’  To paraphrase Woody Harrelson in White Men Can’t Jump – players that are too cool would ‘rather look good and lose than look bad and win.’

Too good: This symptom is tricky… because it is actually an illusion.  The players who think they are too good – actually aren’t! They aren’t anywhere close to being good enough, much less too good!  They are so hypnotized by their ranking, or brainwashed by their entourage, that they won’t admit they have areas of their game that need improvement. They are too good to work on their left,too good to work on their footwork, or too good to work on their mid-range game.  Who needs to be able to do those things when you can dribble between your legs 19 times in a row or dunk the ball with ease? Players that are too good are often shoot 1st, pass 2nd type players.  Actually, they are usually shoot 1st, shoot 2nd, and don’t pass type players. They never bother with making those around them better.  If a teammate can’t hold their own on the court… that is their problem.

Too shy: This symptom is complicated as well.  I don’t know if I would go as far as to say that being too shy is selfish per se; but being shy does stunt improvement.  You have to be assertive if you want to get better! You can’t be too shy to ask questions. You can’t be too shy to reach out and ask for help from your coach.  You can’t be too shy to verbally communicate on offense and defense.  Most kids aren’t shy when it comes to texting, Twitter, and Facebook… but they quickly go into a shell when expected to speak face to face.

If you are trying to be the best player you can be… to maximize your potential and play at the highest level possible… you can’t betoo cool, too good, or too shy.  You need to find a cure for the ‘disease of me.’

My wife and I had a wonderful time in Aruba. We enjoyed delicious food and plenty of sunshine.

We made the commitment to take a yearly vacation, without Luke and Jack, to enjoy quality time together and to keep our marital connection strong. I know plenty of coaches who feel they don’t have time for a vacation, which is understandable, given how hectic the pace of life can get. But you know when you need a vacation the most? When you don’t have time to take one!

As Ferris Bueller so poignantly said back in the ‘80’s:

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around every once in a while… you could miss it.”

As a veteran strength & conditioning coach, my goal is to create an extraordinary environment for players to work out. I take pride in staying on the cutting edge of basketball specific training methodology, techniques, and equipment and aim to create an atmosphere that is positive, inspiring, and where players must step out of their comfort zone to keep up.

To learn how to be ‘comfortable being uncomfortable’ on a consistent basis requires dedication.

Dedication is essential for success in anything, but especially in basketball. The game is so competitive, if you aren’t dedicated, you won’t make it.

The top players at every level spend hours and hours on the court and in the weight room making their strengths stronger, tightening up their applicable weaknesses, and being students of the game. That is dedication.

A powerful quote from legendary Coach Don Meyer comes to mind:

“There are two pains in life. The pain of discipline and the pain of regret. Take your choice.”

Being dedicated means accepting the pain of discipline and answering 3 questions:

1. What do you want? (ex. play college or pro basketball)

2. What will it take to get it? (ex. time, effort, consistency)

3. Will you pay the price? (make sacrifices, dedicate yourself)

While it may be urban legend, I heard that back in his prime (before his spiraling downfall), Tiger Woods used to make 100 consecutive 10-foot putts to end every practice. That is 100 in a row, not 100 total. If he missed his 92nd putt, he started over! That is dedication.

An appropriate equivalent would be free throws. Are you dedicated enough to end every workout by making 5 or 10 or 25 consecutive free throws?

Tiger went on to say:

“If people knew how dedicated I was, they wouldn’t think this came so easy to me.”

Another example of dedication is the NBA early bus. There are two buses that head to the arena before every road game. The early bus heads over 3 hours before tip-off and the late bus heads over 90 minutes before tip-off. The players on the early bus are usually rookies and guys that need to prove themselves. They go over early to get up extra shots and work on their game.

Rumor has it that NBA superstar Tim Duncan still continues to take the early bus every game, even now that his Hall of Fame legacy is solidified. That is dedication.

I also heard that the Spurs organization took notice and said “if our best player can take the early bus, then everyone can take the early bus.” Needless to say the Spurs only take one bus to the arena now!

Top players and coaches understand that dedication isn’t a sometimes thing… it is an all of the time thing. You can’t be kind of dedicated.

You are either dedicated or you’re not; there is no in between.

BG Hoops Fundraising

We are raising funds to pay for our Spring & Summer Program. We'll bring in over 75 kids this spring & summer and they'll participate in practice, clinics, an end of summer camp, they recieve practice gear, and play almost 200 Frosh, JV, & Varsity games combined. All the kids pay for is their own shorts & jerseys. The Spring/Summer Program will cost more than we're trying to raise here but the kids will do a lot of fundraising too. Anything you can do to help our kids out is greatly appreciated.

Mental Toughness

Mental toughness is not something you have on game day. It is a habit of mind that becomes a part of your pride and your self image. It is something you carry with you everywhere: patience in a line of traffic, attentiveness in a classroom, a nobility on the practice floor. It's a quality of mind.

What do you care if you are fouled going for a shot in a pickup game? What do you care if the court you are playing on isn't very will-lit or if the temperature isn't just right? What do you care about how well your uniform fits?

What do you care about referee's calls, length of practice, or the criticism you get? There are thousands of potential complaints, and there is also a certain kind of nobility that surmounts it all. You don't need to worry about all the tiny things, the minor problems, the childish complaints.

Develop a noble quality of mind. Learn to do your best quietly, methodically, without regard for tiny problems and adverse conditions. There are players who ignore all the negatives and give EVERY game, EVERY practice, everything they do their best shot. That is what mental toughness is. That is what every player should strive for.

On September 1st, BG Hoops star (Class of 2002) Arcenio Ramirez, returned from Potros Itson in the LNBP in Mexico after being released. On the same day Coach Robert Zaragoza boarded a plane to Mexico City to become the coach of Captial Titanes.

On September 9th Coach Zee happily signed Arcenio to a deal to become one of his guards in Mexico City. Coach Zee stated "I'm fired up, the Rocket is one his way".

7 C’s of Championship Team Building

There are seven primary areas that go into building your team's chemistry.

1. Common Goal Championship teams have a singular, common focus. The team is most often focused on winning a championship. This is their primary, specified, overt goal and all other goals revolve around it. This goal is firmly embraced by all members of the team, coaching staff, and support staff. Everyone understands that this is the direction and destination that the team is moving toward. Additionally, the goal that the team is striving for typically is so challenging that the only way it can be accomplished is through a unified effort.

2. Commitment While seasons may start with the entire team focused on a common goal, rarely do they end up that way. Commitment is probably the single most important factor that differentiates championship teams, coaches, athletes, businesses, schools, marriages (you name it) from the mediocre. It's much too easy to say you want to win the championship and its a whole other thing to put in the blood, sweat, and tears necessary to pursue a championship - especially when obstacles and adversity strikes. Continual commitment to the team's common goal is one of the toughest areas of team building. Championship teams buy into the mission at every level and make the mission their own. They work hard and pay their dues because they want to, not because they have to. In addition to their commitment, the team members feel a sense of personal and group accountability. The players have a clear understanding of how their individual choices and decisions influence the collective psyche and success of the team. There is a true sense that if an individual is slacking off, he is not just hurting himself but his entire team. The players feel a sense of responsibility and obligation to give it their best.

3. Complementary Roles Championship teams are comprised of several individuals who willingly take pride in a playing a variety of roles. These roles, when played in concert and harmony lead to team success. Thus, each player is assigned specific responsibilities and tasks that help determine the entire team's success. While individually they are not solely responsible for the team's success or failure, collectively each role forms a synergistic whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. The major difficulty in developing complementary roles is that some roles get more attention and praise thereby making them seem more important. Championship teams however realize that all roles are critical to the overall team's success and willingly accept and value their individual roles.

4. Clear Communication A fourth characteristic of championship teams is clear communication. Successful teams communicate successfully both on and off the field/court. The on field communication helps them to perform more efficiently on the field and the off field communication allows them to monitor the team's effectiveness, modify things when necessary, and celebrate successes.

5. Constructive Conflict Along with effective communication, championship teams have the ability to keep conflict under control and often are able to use conflict constructively to further develop and strengthen the team. It is not that championship teams never experience conflict, because this is impossible. Instead they are able to handle the conflict they experience and do not let it interfere with the team's common goal.

6. Cohesion A sixth characteristic shared by many championship teams is that they genuinely like and respect each other. The players like to hang out with each other outside of scheduled practice and game times. Many championship teams will also spend a great deal of time socializing together in larger groups. The players genuinely like to spend a lot of time together outside of actual practices and games. They find reasons to stay together like going to the movies, studying, hanging out, etc. This is not to say that every single player is a part of the group, but that a majority of players tend to socialize together. Cohesion is a factor that often will help your team perform at a higher level.

7. Credible Leadership Finally, it takes a credible coach and team captains to develop, orchestrate, and monitor all the other C's. The team must have leaders who they believe in and have the skills necessary to get the most from the team. Credible leaders create an environment that allows the team to perform to their full potential.

Today BGHS Class of 2002 Alumni, Arcenio Ramirez, flew from Los International Airport en route to Cuidad Obregon, Sonora Mexico to join his professional basketball team Potros ITSON.

Ramirez, BGHS's 2nd All Time Leader in Points, takes his skills across the border in his 1st stint as a pro basketball player. It has been a long arduous road from his BG playing to his days at East Los Angeles College and San Francisco State but very rewarding. Ramirez earned his degree from Cal State LA but now is comfortable in taking a shot at chasing every basketball player's dream to be a professional.

Mentor & Coach Al Cuevas (left) along with pro coach Robert Zaragoza (right) joined a confident Ramirez to LAX. "We are always proud when a BG Alum can take their game to the next level. Arcenio has always been a skilled player, that along with his work ethic and attitude have got him to an opportunity at the pro level. I am confident he will do well. He always finds a way to succeed on the court".

We at BG Hoops wish Arcenio luck and we will keep updates throughout the season.

BG Hoops: Pre-Season Conditioning Program Begins August 23rd, 2010

We will begin our pre-season conditioning program on August 23rd, 2010 at the Sand Dunes at Manhattan Beach. We will leave BG at 8 AM to be at the "Dunes" by 9 AM. We all need to register on the "Dunes" website and reserve our spot. Register for 9:30 on August 23, 25, 27, 3o, Sept 1, 3, & 6th.

No one is allowed to work out without a reservation. They also charge $1 each time you work out. We will be at the "Dunes" August 23, 25, 27, 30, September 1, 3, and 6th.

Once we start school we'll go twice a week. We'll do our strength program 4 days a week as well after running. Call Coach Cuevas with questions.

When I was a kid playing sports, there were no clubs, travel teams, or private coaches. Except for summer baseball leagues, the primary place to play was high school. When I was in the 10th grade, I wanted to play basketball in the worst way.

Unfortunately, given my size and talent, that's how I played. But in those days, sports was part of the educational program and, to accommodate every kid who wanted to play, there were four skill levels - varsity, junior varsity, B, and C teams.

I was a third-stringer on the C team. My ambition was to play in 12 quarters during the season, the minimum requirement for a letterman's jacket.

Fortunately, the coach liked my spunk, so he'd put me in at the end of games when I could do no harm. In the last quarter of the last game, he made sure I got my letter by giving me an eight-second stint. Although I think I played less than two minutes of total game time during that season, I was part of the team and played in every practice.

Three years later, I was the only senior on the C team but I was a starter! Of all my high school achievements, none was more important than my three basketball letters.

It wasn't just recreation for me. It was education. My sports experience strengthened my character and helped me develop important life skills including goal-setting, preparation, and perseverance. It also taught me about honor and sportsmanship.

So when you read chilling stories about cheating coaches, out-of-control fans, or spoiled athletes, don't blame sports. Blame those who don't do it right.

Gentlemen,

Welcome to the off-season!!

A time when you will develop as the player that you will become for the upcoming season, 2010-2011... which by the way, starts 8 months from now!!...

The off season is a time when you must develop your championship mentality... It is a time to prepare, just like UCLA Legendary Coach John Wooden said "Failing to Prepare is Preparing to Fail"... So when you go to bed everyday until the basketball season comes, ask yourself, "What did I do today to make myself better today? How can I improve as an individual to help my team become a championship caliber squad?"...

There are a million responses to that question but the one answer it should never be is "nothing". Do something, anything!!! Every day you must make yourself a little bit better... By becoming a better player you are being prepared for your opportunity! You never when it will come...

If you do not get better in 8 months, there is only ONE person to blame....

Everyone develops at different rates but the off season has nothing to do with skill and more to do with the effort you put every time you step on the practice floor, everyday. Here is a quote that I memorized during my high school years...

"At practice:
There are NO TIMEOUTS, NO SUBS, NO FOULS, NO EXCUSES...
You just GO ALL OUT until its over...
And if you want it bad enough, ITS NEVER OVER...

It takes MORE to be a Champion..."

TO STAY HERE:

1. BE COMMITTED TO YOUR ACADEMICS – Know you’re A-G requirements…make a plan…get a diploma. Go to class every day. Be on time. Sit up front. Take good notes. Do all extra work possible. Plan ahead and talk to your teachers when we travel or you are having a problem. Get tutors when you need them.

2. BE COMMITTED TO HAVING CLASS – Treat teachers, trainers, support staff, cafeteria workers, and all you meet with respect. Treat other people the way you want to be treated. Moody people are rude. Everyone takes notes, everyone picks up trash and everyone is courteous. Say please, thank you, yes sir, and yes ma’am. Give people the benefit of the doubt and always remember to smile.

3. BE COMMITTED TO DOING THE RIGHT THING – We have plenty of school rules…know them. Realize if you just try to do the right thing you will be OK. Try to do the next right thing right and you are as close to perfect as any person can be.

4. BE COMMITTED TO THE PROGRAM – We realize that athletes are in a fish bowl at B.G.H.S. Every word and action will be watched. Our program’s reputation provides many opportunities yet brings many responsibilities. We must be committed to build on to the tradition of our program and respect those that have gone before us and paid the price to build the program.

TO PLAY HERE:

5. BE COMMITTED TO HARD WORK – Our program is built on the concept that hard work pays off. We believe that we work harder than anyone else…and because of that we always deserve to win. There is a reason we are the best we can be…we work at it. Our best player must be our hardest worker. Be our hardest worker.

6. BE COMMITTED TO BECOMING A SMART PLAYER – We all must be ready to learn. We believe we work smarter than anyone else…We must develop players who understand the game. We all must be good listeners and learn by watching. We must make good decisions, we must play with poise. We prepare mentally for practice and games.

7. BE COMMITTED TO OUR TEAM ATTITUDE CONCEPT – We must all believe in our team concept. Our program is built on the concept that the team/program is bigger than any one player or coach. We need unselfish players and coaches.

8. COMMIT YOURSELF TO A WINNING ATTITUDE – Our players must be committed to winning but understand we don’t measure our success by winning alone. Each time we play we evaluate ourselves on reaching our potential. The test for our team is to play against the game not just our opponent. We never quit. We always are looking for ways to win.

TO WIN HERE:

9. BELIEVE IN OUR SYSTEM OF PLAY – Commit yourself to our philosophy, to our system of play. Be a sponge and soak up the concepts of how we play. Learn your role…then accept your role and do it the best you can.

10. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF – Play with confidence…think positive. Don’t get down when you play poorly… …be a leader... remember that your heart controls what your tongue says. Lead by example.

11. BELIEVE IN YOUR TEAMMATES – Communicate with each other…help each other. Remember the strength of the pack is the wolf and the strength of the wolf is the pack. Encourage each other and support each other. Don’t ever forget the importance of the shell around the team. Be a friend. We are all different – be tolerant of teammates and others.

12. BELIEVE IN YOUR COACHES – Understand that your coaches are trying to help make you better people and players. Ask questions…don’t whine, complain or make excuses. Learn to take tough coaching. You must believe that the coaches are doing what they think is right for the team and you.

FIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL PLAYERS

Commitment

Don’t be Luke-warm, put your whole self in – Be PASSIONATE about what you do
“A leader with great passion & few skills will always outperform a leader with great skills and little passion.” – John Maxwell
Be committed to becoming the best you can be – Skill Development (develop the unconscious)
Confidence comes from demonstrated ability

There are four types of players:
1. Unconscious & incompetent: You stink, but you don’t know it. You don’t improve.
2. Conscious & incompetent: You stink, and you know it, so you work at it (not so bad).
3. Conscious & competent: You’re good and you know it, so you don’t get better.
4. Unconscious & competent: You’re good but you don’t think about it because you’re always working.

2) Toughness (physical & mental)

Mental more so than physical (attention to detail because good is in the details)
BE COMFORTABLE WITH BEING UNCOMFORTABLE (pressure is good & stress is bad)
You have to have tenacity, which is the ability to stick with it and be persistent in your attitude and effort
If you want to be the best player you have to be the hardest worker and those who work the hardest are the last to surrender

3) Communication (on & off the floor)

Listen vs. hearing ( listen with your eyes, ears, mind & heart)
Great players crave hard instruction
Have huddles on the floor to communicate with teammates
Sometimes you have to figure it out without your coach (communicate to “Fix It”)
Adapt, Improvise, & Overcome

4) Leadership

Leadership starts from the top
You have to learn to serve before you can lead (servant leader)
Lead from the front not from the rear (lead by example because your example isn’t the main thing, it is the only thing)
Not everybody can lead, but everybody has a role
“An army of lions led by an ass will be defeated by an army of asses led by a lion.”

Roles:
1. Define

4. Fulfill

5. Goal Oriented

Have long term & short term goals
Set specific goals that are observable & measurable (Have a narrow focus to help concentration)
Set goals that are realistically attainable & within your control
Determine what you want – find out how much it is going to cost you – decide whether you are willing to pay the price
You must have the persistence to follow through with your set goals (BE A FINISHER)

How to Be a Great Student Athlete

Prioritize. You should go to practice when it is scheduled. But when you go home, school work should be the most important thing.
Realize that you are still an athlete, and to do well, you must also practice on your own.
Eat healthy. Eat a good breakfast that contains foods from all the food groups so you have a good balance of vitamins. For snacks, you should avoid junk food, and instead snack on fruits and vegetables.
Do your homework. This goes back to your student half of the job. If you don't do your homework, your grades will suffer, you may get detention and miss practice, and if you miss practice because of detention, you will be punished.
Get 7-10 hours of sleep. Do not party every night. A couple Friday nights are OK, but don't over do it.
Don't drink, smoke, or do drugs. This should go without saying.
Work harder than anyone on the practice field, and both on the field/court and in class, ask questions if you don't understand something.
Be ready to work.
Practice is not supposed to be fun. Games are supposed to be fun when you are kicking the crap out of your rival, especially when it is in high school, playing under the lights.
Don't play just because the hot girl in your grade is a cheerleader. Play because you want to win.

What is Class?

Class never runs scared. It is sure-footed and confident in the knowledge that you can meet life head-on and handle whatever comes along.

Class never makes excuses. It takes its lumps and learns from past mistakes.

Class is considerate of others. It knows that good manners are nothing more than a series of petty sacrifices.

Class bespeaks an aristocracy that has nothing to do with ancestors or money. The most affluent blueblood can be totally without class while the descendant of a humble background may ooze class from every pore.

Class never tries to build itself up by tearing others down. Class is already up and need not strive to look better by making others look worse.

Class can “walk with kings and keep its virtue, and walk with crowds and keep in common touch.” Everyone is comfortable with the person who has class – because he is comfortable with himself.

If you have class, you don’t need much of anything else. If you don’t have it, no matter what else you have – it doesn’t make much difference.

We are extremely happy to invite all of you B.G.H.S. Basketball Alumni to the 2009-2010 Alumni Game.

Date:	Thursday, January 7, 2010
Time:	7:00pm - 8:30pm
Location:	BGHS Big Gym

We are doing something a little different this year. We want to give our alumni more of a chance to play, their family and friends a chance to see them play one more time at B.G.H.S. , and do it as a fundraiser for the basketball program as well. This year we'll have 2 classes play against each other. Class of ? vs. Class of ?. First 2 teams to register with Coach Cuevas will play. Each player needs to pay $25 and you'll receive a t-shirt with your own number commemorating the event. We want a maximum of 10 players per team so that everyone gets enough playing time.

You can also have teams with combined classes if there weren't enough graduates your senior year. The classes of 2008 & 2009 have already shown a lot of interest so get in touch with Coach Cuevas if you're interested. ONE GETS AWAY

With a 2-0 series lead last week in the Best of 5 series, The Commish, Robert Zaragoza's Halcones de Xalapa semi pro loses in the Liga Veracruzana Finals last night.

The Xalcones were defeated by interstate rival Halcones Rojos de Veracruz. Both teams ended their regular seasons with a record of 9-1 in their respective divisions.

Xalapa gained the 1-0 lead at home by beating los Rojos. Game 2, Xalapa down 17 at halftime and with League MVP Jesus Gonzalez eject make a miraculous come from behind victory, 99-98.

On the road for Game 3, the Halcones are without Gonzalez and SF Julio Martin del Campo (back injury) and drop Game 3 by 25. With a 2-1 advantage entering Game 4, Xalapa makes some adjustments and take this game into overtime and let the series tie at 2-2.

Game 5 at Xalapa was close throughout trailing by 3 at halftime but a few miss cues in the 2nd half and the Rojos pull off the win and championship.

"It was a great run this season. But ultimately we lost the games that mattered most." said Coach Zaragoza, "Xalapa is known for making Finals and winning them and we couldn't seal the deal. I am proud of my kids too bad we couldn't get the one win we needed. This is a tough pill to swallow but we'll be back."
